Adhoc Surveillance Project completes a 2nd Quarter
Author: Mutembesa Daniel
The Adhoc Surveillance Project, a sub-project of mCROPS completed its 2nd Quarter of calendar activities with a stunning collection of well over 2000 reports from March to May 2016 in the 1st Quarter of implementation of the adhoc surveillance application to monitor cassava crop health by crowdsourcing real-time from a network of farmers, extension service and subject-matter experts across the Uganda.
Commissioned in June 2016, The 2nd Quarter saw the adhoc cassava surveillance map populated further by 1600 reports sent in weekly of various disease images, anomalies, vector reports across the country.
The 2nd quarter also saw the first ever user survey directed to understand the preferences and issues patent to engaging a crowd to source real-time surveillance data.
The survey asked about their job descriptions, what issues they faced in participating with the adhoc surveillance, how the adhoc surveillance had benefitted both them directly and their communities and what their preferences for incentives are.
A great deal of data and information came to light to steer the adhoc surveillance in a stronger direction.
Steering into the 3rd Quarter, the adhoc surveillance project looks to understand the implementation of subject surveillance and implementing a field survey for ground truth and on-going research on formulation of mechanisms to adaptively incentivise participants.
The steering committee is comprised of Dr. Christopher Omongo, acting director of the Cassava Regional Centre of Excellence & PI of the African Cassava Whitefly Project, Dr. Pariyo Anthony, the PI of the Cassava Seed Systems, Dr. Titus Alicia, PI of Cassava Diagnostics project, Dr. Ernest Mwebaze, PI of mCROPS project & sub-projects, senior members to each of the corresponding projects and Mr. Mutembesa Daniel, Lead Researcher and Project head for the Adhoc Surveillance project, a sub-project of mCROPS.
